The Drovers Journal
Our newsletter, The Drover's Journal, has an interesting history.
Back in the late 1980s, Tony Fountain, through the Fountain Publishing Company, was also involved in publishing livestock magazines, one of which was used to promote Santa Gertrudis beef cattle, and its masthead was
Tony’s father, Clarrie Fountain, had at one stage in his long pastoral and agency career been, just prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, the Manager of Mumpeowie Station near Maree in northern South Australia.
The drover depicted squatting in the logo was, when the photo was taken many years ago by the then classic magazine Hoofs & Horns, (owned and published by R.M. Williams), the head stockman on Mumpeowie so it seemed logical to Tony that he should embrace the magazine's cover each issue.
When Tony came to Sydney in 1988 to help start the Ray White Real Estate Group's NSW auction business, he sold the other magazines but kept The Drover's Journal as he loved it and felt it may yet see the light of day again.
This it did in 2000 when he became Principal of the Ray White Rural Rockhampton (Qld) franchise and it became the communication tool for the three years that he operated there before returning to Sydney to take over the Ray White auction operations in NSW.
On retiring from Ray White’s Corporate world in 2006, once again the magazine went into hybernation and now, with his taking on of the Ray White Rural Southern Highlands franchise, once again “The Drover” makes his appearance.
The magazine will quite obviously be about property that Ray White Rural Fountain & Co has for sale but we also want it to be about an Australia that has probably passed forever.
We want it also about the drovers, the cattlemen, the pioneer women, bush poetry – all fair dinkum Aussie information.
